dvd release of dj kentaro performing his deck action live with various guests such as fat jon, hunger, and the pharcyde, dropping in from time to time adding their wordplay action over the beats and loops.
like the album, its clear kentaro knows his tricks and is masterful when it comes the missing-in-action art of turntablism, however, watching a dvd of a show is not going to be that interesting is it ?
well yes and no actually.
the visuals are intense, with close ups of kentaro proving that he’s all over those faders and buttons (look i have no idea how that stuff is done, but fuck it looks like seriously hard work !), and after a few minutes, it all becomes rather hypnotic, and scientific, with y`our head becoming full of phrases such as “how the fuck is he able to work all this out?”
then just as the interest begins to flag, out of nowhere, the stage is filled with a band called hifana who bring on steel drums and blow the roof off the sucka.
the result track, harvest dance, is wild, absolutely wild, with reggae/ska rhythms, and d-n-b breakdowns, oh, and did i not mention the steel drums.
cliche it may be, but i was jumping around my living room.
as ever with these ninja tune packages, there are bonus extras galore, so the bottom line is if you like the source album, and enjoy seeing vinyl being put through some well deserved tolerance tests, then this is going to be visual gold.
