a few weeks ago i posted a bad tempered rant about this mixtape.
i accused the creator of using scruffy 128 mp3s for the mix, thus giving it a generally dreadful sound quality vibe throughout.
little did i expect anything to come out of the wire in regards to the post, so when an email dropped into the new blog email address a mere few hours later from the man himself, i was somewhat aghast.
so armed with the facts, i have decided to post a clarification.
according to dj wrongtom, the music, bar a few sections, wasn’t created using mp3s, but proper records.
so, soz about that.
apparently the loss of quality in a mix like this, is often caused by the very process of layering/mashing tracks together, and as dj wrongtom doesn’t use all the computer trickery and fancy expensive studio gubbins, there is little way to beef up the sonics, especially as the mix was recorded live with minimal overdubbing and edits.
so, soz about that as well.
however, while i was obviously not too chuffed about the sound quality (its all about the treble intensive vocals really), at no point did i slate the actual mix itself.
in fact, quite the opposite.
the varied track selection is exactly the type of mixtape that ireallylovemusic loves to soak up. the mash of electro, hip hop, dubbed up reggae, ambient classics, genuine pop and everything else in-between, is a head spinning blast of fun. i mean where else are you going to hear a dubbed up version of u2s some days are better than others (a personal fave part of the mix), or a chunk of baile funk spliced with technotronic, alongside future sound of london getting all sunshined up with rockers revenge, or the excellent mia getting all dubbed up, the blends come at you fast-n-furious and after a few listens, really hit the spot.
the mix, while dipping into the underground and little known entries, is interspersed with plenty of well known hits of the day making this a genuinely wonderful listen (just don’t get the headphones out – ahem !)
as a bonus, the disc finishes with a wonderful bonus dub mashup, showing exactly where toms love lies, and, having heard the mix he did last year for mixmag it’s very apparent that he is a keen dub fan, so can antidote records please get this man onboard for one of their trojan records mixtapes as i reckon tom could easily kill the competition in that particular corner.
one more thing, i also made the assumption that the association with hard-fi was helping pay the bills.
this too was bollocks, so, if you fancy sending him a fiver, then pop over to his website and i’m sure you can work something out.
