well i gotta give it to the man, he has tried, but as his name implies, i think he has got something wrong here.
i picked up dj wrongtoms recent mixtape, cassetiquette.
it’s an illegal set of bootlegs all blended together as so many do these days, and seeing as the release will be one of those limited things, i picked it up with some degree of feverish fanboy expectations. after all, this mix is a legal avoiding set, and doesn’t have to give a shit like the recent ghp album. and, i will admit that there are some inspired sections throughout (hello some rocks are better than others being a particular fave).
however, i have a massive gripe against this one.
i paid good money in a proper record shop, and blow me down if a lot on offer here has been cut-n-pasted with shabby sounding mp3s. the sound is skinnier than kate moss on laxatives, no sonic punch, no woofer troubling bass, not even a stereo pan effect thrown in here and there. just a mono am radio sanctioned mashup.
i understand a lot of people love their 128 mp3s and fill their music machines with these pretenders to the cd throne, but i hate the shimmy shakers, and this mixtape is the reason i fear for the way music like this will be made from hereon. it’s only a matter of time that music like this, thats has been downgraded in quality, becomes the norm.
so few people care it seems, it’s more about quantity (60Gb!) as opposed to the actual sonic quality.
i don’t believe that this is a question of funds, dj wrongtom has worked with hard-fi a lot, and that’s got to have paid some bills for studio toys. i mean unsigned mashup folks create mixes that rock the stereo deeper than this.
such a shame as i really wanted to love this, perhaps if i listen to this on speakers, as opposed to headphones, then maybe it will make a lot more sense.
then again, as tom from the infadels drops in to declare, tom was crap at mixing then, and is crap now, maybe the joke is on me, and this is how the album is meant to sound ?
still, if you want to check out how mashups should sound in 2007, then track this down, but be warned, your neighbours aren’t going to complain of the walls shaking with sonic booms.
