letta mbulu : pula yetla

coming from a 2 albums on 1 cd released by stateside back in 2005, it wasn’t until a few years later that the sheer majesty of lettas vocals really hit home for yours truly.

soulful purity and dynamism being the order of the day make this drama filled track from 1967 such a pleasure to listen to.

the storm, the gradual tension filled build up, and the full on vocal release at 2 minutes 15 seconds interacting with the horns and backing vocals, never ceases to send a welcome shiver up the spine.

of course the story of letta mbulu has been written about at length, but i think the music she made with david axelrod needs to be given more exposure.

spread this joyous example far and wide, and for an all too brief time, make the world a better place.
