second release by the duo that everyone is wanting to know more of.
having released the debut, living with ghosts, (as given some love : here), the girls, katherine blamire and jessica davies, are now getting up to speed with this new set of songs coming out at the end of june.
once again released in a limited 7" form but as an extra treat, coming with an 5 track cd, the rules are quite simple.
if it aint broke, don’t fix it.
in other words, the music is a continuation of the minimal but atmospherically rich instrumentation involving twanged up guitars, stripped back string sections, brushed drums, all with the trademarked doubled up girl vocal harmonies that can invoke either a swamped up nightmare, or an inner sense of calm.
the dusky mood is everything, and across these 5 tracks, things are indeed of the candle light flicker part of the day when thoughts and actions are directed towards the turmoil of the heart and soul.
so, is this ep more wicker man soundtrack material ?
no.
this time, the songs could provide an alternative aural accompaniment to the gothic horror brilliance of the night of the hunter.
it’s that good.
currently, the smoke fairies are in a crowd of one, though i would suggest that the number of devotees is bound to be increased over the coming months.
highly recommended.
