melodic : 2009

when i first set up ireallylovemusic i never for a moment expected the site to get any hits or attention, so when i got an email out of the blue from the lads @ moshi moshi i was somewhat taken aback.

a few days later thanks to the kindness of moshi moshi, i was listening to the pedro/kathryn williams ep, which to this day still sends shivers up my spine such is its brilliance.

from there i came to find out that pedro was on loan from manchester based melodic records.

one look at the simple but beautiful label logo, and i knew i was going to need to hear the music.

generosity for a hidden corner of the web struck again, and due to the pedro connection, i was granted a chance to hear a section of the labels strange but fascinating catalogue.

i loved it.

the mix of electronic manipulation and traditional instrumentation from such names as baikonour, minotaur shock, and of course the structure laptop beats and harmony of pedro ticked lots of my boxes.

subsequently, i set up the dedicated page with access to all manner of badly formatted, typo heavy reviews, interviews, gig write ups etc :  here.

however, as so often happens in life, people drift apart, a distance forms, and things go cold.

so much so, that i began to think that the label had gone the way as so many labels are currently doing in these hardened times.

then a few weeks ago i randomly spotted a new baikonour album in the racks bearing the logo (i checked the cover half expecting the album to have been released on a different label) , a glowing review in mojo for a new band called the soundcarriers, and it became apparent that something was happening.

an email later and all became clear.

it seems that for a while, david had indeed lost the passion for releasing new music, and ventured into new areas of the music industry from his northern hideout, and even began the adventure that is parenting.

however, the lure of exciting new sounds kept nagging away, which meant he felt the urge to get the label back into action.

thereby leading to todays unexpected treats, not in digital form, but old fashioned beautifully packaged cds dropping through the letterbox :

baikonour : your ear knows future

the soundcarriers : harmonium

rec.tangle : heavy maple

from the quick spins i have been able to sneak in amongst the daily chores, i suspect that the david axelrod influenced album by the soundcarriers is going to be hitting the top of my playlist for a very long time.

naturally, i will write these up once i have absorbed them a little more, but i just wanted to raise awareness for anyone who has been interested in the labels catalogue that melodic are definitely back in the game.
