well where on earth do i start with this one ?
first up, that cover.
it’s just wrong on soooo many levels it’s not true.
subsequently, this cd sat in the pile for a long time before i gave it a spin. i just couldn’t get past the awfulness of the facial hair, the colours, the tackiness of it.
definitely a case, do not judge a cd by its cover.
caught off guard a couple of weeks ago i placed the cd in the machine, and lo and behold, the big fun disco glam electro pop anthems kick started my day into a whole new groove.
quite simply this is a brash, superficial album of hook heavy glammed up pop music, and happens to be a massive breath of fresh air.
while the cool press are currently all over the girls-n-synths brigade, kennedy has gone and become quite the pop star that no-one knows about. yet.
well that’s not quite true.
according to the frothy press release the man has connections with many hidden corners of the los angeles hipster (arghhhh) scene, but let’s just ignore that part of the back story and listen to the music.
clearly with a cover like that, and track names such as hillbilly witchcraft, mama made me a pimp, and john and ono (feat. yelle), it’s apparent that this is not an album that takes itself too seriously with celeb name dropping lyrics (‘like a bad fergie song’), and cliched blinged up desires being a constant theme throughout the wordplay.
thankfully though, flight of the conchords this aint.
instead, the music (which sounds like some seriously expensive studio time has been used up in its creation) ranges from full on string heavy 70s disco, mama made me a pimp and let it out, foot stomping distorted mouth organ glam rock, hillbilly witchcraft, daft punk styled electro, and even de la soul styled hip hop, sleep talking, the genre hopping album is never anything less than wonderfully entertaining.
summary : enjoy the party soundtrack, just don’t look at the sleeve.
