following the epic 18 minute timo mass remix yesterday, here’s another treat for you.
being honest i was not impressed by the debut album by these guys, despite all the love from the serious press it just didn’t work for me.
then today i received a copy of the new single, oh my love. and lo’ it’s excellent.
yes, it may be in the same corner as the kills, and the mighty flykkiller ie. muso bloke on guitar/machines with sex kitten doing her vamp thing around the mike, but fuck it, it’s a cliche well worth exploiting when the results are as darkly delicious as this.
the lead track is all moody and reverb heavy in their noir goth tinged new wave rock, with sneering vocals that instigate grey cell connections to siouxsie sous thus elevating the track to unexpected levels of drama .
let this play out, and watch the cats whiskers curl back.
then there is the old fashioned b-side, lookin’ for you, drum machine loops, compelling dance floor bass lines that peter hook would kill for in ’09, and vocal hooks that simultaneously hurt and soothe.
quite simply i’m smitten.
so where’s the treat as promised earlier ?
well, as is the way in these twittered up times, there is a remix, the "mighty mouse nyc sensations mix", doing the rounds.
taking the stripped back claustrophobic moods of the b-side, and strapping a italo disco friendly donna summer/moroder synth line to the tracks core.
such genetic engineering transforms the original into something that could easily soundtrack any disco scene should they ever make the film "studio 54 : the blade years".
fantastic stuff indeed.
