guilty simpson – get riches

stones throw are one of those labels that seem intent on keeping the flame burning for non-blinged up hip hop that dominates the genre, making it one to keep an eye on. while there is no way i could ever claim to be a hardcore follower of the label, i can’t deny that i have enjoyed quite a chunk of their funk over their years, so when this primer for the full length, ode to the ghetto, (out in march) turned up i was rather chuffed.
long associated with the producer to the underground, j dilla (r.i.p), the man known as guilty simpson at last steps out of the shadows and drops his moody vibe all over some nice beats.
lead track get riches has a wonderfully dark and rich atmosphere, intensified with police sirens, strings, and a handclap created beat, all ruffed up by mr. porter (app. he’s part of dr. dres studio set up), with guilty simpson declaring the intention of getting riches in an intimidating vocal manner.
a case of listen, but don’t mess.
flip the record, and it’s time for everyones fave samples and loops freakoid, madlib, to provide the back up for she won’t stay at home, an unusual sounding production for sure, where a vocal harmony sample is twisted and looped giving the all too brief 2 minutes a sort of updated version of 60s doo-wop future funk, on top of which the guilty man lays down a well trodden path relating tales of troubles with the fairer sex something many of us can feel a certain degree of connectivity with.
good stuff.
