and so after a long build up, the world is at last able to hear the proper unremixed version of burn my shadow featuring old doors fixated goth rocker himself, ian astbury.
of course, the track has already appeared in remix form on the epic 4 cd boxset, self defence, that unkle released a few months ago putting all the various remixes and extras that came long during the never, never, land era, but here the track is in its pure unadulterated rawest form.
and quite raw it is to.
gone are any shreds of evidence of the bands hip hop based history, in fact for the new material, the primary source is rock music. loud and proud.
obviously, james lavelle, and his now well estblished studio wizard, richard file have been hanging out with the lords of the fuzz rock, queens of the stone age quite a lot in recent times following a few remix teamups etc.
i have to admit, i think that this is a great move. the results have proven to be something rather unique with one foot in the rock world, but never drifting too far from the darker edges of the neon lit late night dance crowd.
especially when alongside the rock orientated originals you get the more dancefloor based revisions, in the case of the proper single release, the part with your money incentive is the 10 minute epic beast that is called unkle surrender sound session #5 that comes on the cd and 12″, in which james and aidan lavelle (nepotism lives !) strip the song back and go down the ever so cool route of pulsating minimal techno.
the synthetically enhanced track is a glorious piece of moody dance music with all the right clicks and glitches but with the typically massive unkle production sheen to make any stereo system sound fucking amazing.
oh, and if that wasn’t enough, the brilliantly disturbing artwork is by massive attacks 3d who as well as sorting out the artwork across the whole project, appears on the forthcoming war stories album that comes out in july.
nb. if you pre-order the war stories album via the unkle website, not only do you get the instrumental extra cd, but there is supposedly an extra 4 track cd that will only be made available to those who have gone down the pre-order path.
no details as to the tracklisting currently available.
you have been suitable tipped off.
