this new trio have some degree of history, with various members having been part of other bands, and well publicised direct connections to franz ferdinand, who took the band on tour, probably helping smooth over the notorious demo to record label path (deny! deny !).
so when the various folks involved regrouped under the simple 1990s name, they decided to just do this rock-n-roll game just for fun and lo, a wonderfully natural knack at crafting uptempo dance friendly glam infused garage pop became the much loved result.
fans of simple kid should definitely check this excellent sharp-n-snappy debut out, for where simple kid is all about the mood and melancholy, this album is a pure happy vibe listen, with a lot of cheekiness embedded within the psycho-pop. for example, cult status riffs on by with the refrain my cult keeps me alive to a dirty ruff’d up lick, only for the final twist to come in at the end with my cult status keeps me fucking your wife.
laugh ? oh yes indeed, and the good news is that there is plenty more of that type of nudge nudge wink wink lyrical enjoyment to be had over the albums 12 tracks, and when the accompanying songs are as melody strong and full of hook-ridden choruses, then it’s going to be a great festival season for all concerned.
