while i played a lot of records with a lot of guitars recently, i dropped this new french compilation into the machine sat down with the new issue of mojo which happens to have iggy pop on the cover causing a certain connection with the noise that was coming out of the stereo within a few minutes, especially as the opening words that are shouted out are just lick my boots by a band called second sex, then you just know that they have a well worn copy of raw power not too far from the recording studio.
in recent times the best known french music has been of the electronic variety, whether its the laid back sugar of air or the more spikey variety that comes from those over @ ed banger records. so, as if to prove that the cool kids in france are getting down to the garage rock-n-roll thing in a fine way, bonus track records have put together this compilation with audio and visual references to the ig naturally, new york and even elvis (the superb the hellboys).
over the 13 tracks, 7 bands basically give it their damned all, sometimes with an air of marychain feedback, simple ramones ripped pleasure inducing riffs, sometimes its a slab of libertines shambolic, but in a oh so very stylish, nature.
i’d be a liar if i said it wasn’t any good as i played the album from start to finish and then did it all over again, and i will do so again later on, and thats gotta mean they are doing something right.
