devils gun – raising the beast
a 6 headed live monster currently roams the live circuit readying itself for the forthcoming summers festival season. taking elements from breakbeat, acid house, and rock music they scour the record shops for old freestylers remixes to make sure that they have the combination of head banging noise and dancefloor rhythms are intact. people have used names such as basement jaxx when describing this entity. pah. this is old school leftfield/prodigy excellence that will please the throbbing masses.
this debut single comes with a couple of remixes, but the noise is all the same, rave chants over a rock-dancefloor killer.

pop levi – sugar assault me now
lots of alt.pop cooler-than-thou-references get ticked by this new troubadour that has been given a dedicated ninja tune imprint, counter music, on which to release his music. facial hair excess, glam chords, and a tune heavy song that could really catch on if given the necessary radio play. while the press release goes on about the mans life journey so far (ladytron, california excess) this means little when a song plays on the radio, and in that respect, the three versions that are supplied, along with some new versions of songs that appeared on pops debut ep are a well executed homage to all things 60 psychedelic pop music. sometimes guitars are full on and riffed up a la marc bolan, and others the vibe (man) is all mellow and donovan like. the so called power mix of the lead track strips away the melody and thrusts the echoed drum to the fore, a perfect slice of metal guru guitar action that’s worthy of plenty of spins irrespective of the spreadsheet love thats going to be forthcoming, and part 2 ups the fuzzed up layers to a level that would make the dandy warhols proud. along with the lead track, the ep features hollywood versions of several other tracks from the forthcoming album, making from the day that you were born a rather special lennon styled piano song that should win over any loved up smoochers.

outputmessage – someill ep
fantastic 5 track remix ep on which the best track of last years nebulae is given some more love and attention. considering that the album appeared on ireallylovemusic end-of-year list for those that asked, i have to say this release is the perfect icing on the cake. the sublime kraftwerk melodies and simple production emphasises the point that all the protool sythpads mean nothing if you aint got a tune, and in this case outputmessage most certainly does. so what of the extras for those that need to know these things. well, the second version is massaged into shape by hipster pleasing label mates working for a nuclear free city who strap on a welcome fat and warm bassline and make the track just stand large and proud in a swathe of echo and dub effects resulting in total woofer devastation. in a perfect world these 2 bands would collaborate until the end of time. things don’t stop there however, next there is marcheurs de sommeil which involves my robot friend and includes sweet harmony rich electropop vocals over some classic vince clarke styled synths. swoon? to fucking right i did, and then some.
the so called american pop band remix is one for fans of epic swooping electronic noises and tangerine dream, and the final person version may just be a little too brittle and cold considering the past 15 minutes of sonically enhanced warmth.
however, for the wfanfc version alone, this ep is essential.
