the new single from the magick obsessed singer-songwriter pop levi, is, despite his technology fearing image actually jumping into the weird wired world by releasing a robot that people can talk to via their instant messanger systems. so, rather than getting all the techno-gobble wrong .. here’s the gubbins from the ninja tune people themselves (nb : pop levi is the sole artist on the new counter records imprint of ninja tune)
“the digital campaign for pop levi’s forthcoming album features a unique way of talking to new fans. people are encouraged to add pop levi’s instant messenger alter ego to their ‘buddy lists’ for a chance to chat to him using the popular instant messenger services. the artificial intelligent ‘robopop’ has been developed by ninja tune and kleber design for the album released early next year. he has been programmed to chat about popÂ’s record releases, his live shows and his thoughts about cosmology and various current issues. robopop will send fans video and audio clips, links to live dates and to push content to them direct to the users own desktop.

robopop will start with a limited knowledge of the real world, however over time he has the ability to ‘learn’ and answer the kind of questions people want to hear, aided by the astral teachings of the real pop levi. it will be used to drive content for the singles and their respective videos, to create a buzz around secret tour dates, to build the mailing list and to spread news of competitions. it has been developed using a mix of jabber, ichat, php, mysql.
pop levi’s forthcoming album ‘the return to form black magick party’ is released on the 12th february 2007. this is his first release on the newly formed counter records a subsidiary of ninja tune.
