dance to the radio – new releases

folks.

for reasons stated elsewhere i have pulled back on my coverage of singles. however here’s a few that you should be keeping an eye out for.
first up, iforward russia! have released an ep/remix package on their excellent dance to the radio label that should please people who like their indie rock all messy but rather epic at the same time, but aside from the noises that are made by the record labels boss, dance to the radio also happen to release stuff by other bands, and currently this involves sky larking, and voltage union, both bands excel at that good old fashioned indie guitar pop but with very different styles and reasons for necessary purchase.
sky larkin go for the groove of my old faves the darling buds in the use of girl pop vocals matched by low slung guitars a la a restrained sonic youth but never distancing themselves too far from a quality pop song for their debut single. lead track one of two has a spot on chorus that will have zane lowe gushing in excelsis, and for once, i would be glad for such hyperbole, as it’s a cracker of a single

whereas ..
voltage union are a little more full on with their debut single. on your marks is a punch drunk beast that whips you around the head with its clash of guitars and synths in a glorious mess of alt.rock post punk noise, which amazingly at 30 seconds drops in a chorus hook that grabs you and teases, before disappearing for far too long (well not that long considering the songs all too brief 2 minute duration). flip the record, or do the next button thing, and zombie #2 is an urgent jerky track that may make comparisons with many other nme sanctioned bands too easy. however, as the song gives it all with the ‘uhhhh oh oh oh’ shoutouts and the spelling out of future to buzzcock styled noise, you cannot help but be swept along.
