grand mal – whyd ya do it

recently the music that’s been provided by this establishment has been of the spiky electronic and beats variety.
so today i thought it was time to go back to the song. and to whom do i turn to in these times? well my old fave grand mal of course.
i realise i’ve harped on and on about the latest album, love is the best con in town, but as that is yet to be made available in the uk, i thought i would give a taster here.
however, rather than a standard album track i decided to drop an exclusive.
you see, sometime prior to the album getting released, i was lucky enough to receive a 6 track demo cd from bill whitten of the band.
a couple of these songs grew up and became ‘proper’ versions, whereas the others have remained in their unreleased demo form.
now, when it comes to demos i am anything but a collector. to me the whole concept of strapping a demo track onto special edition re-releases is an unwanted extra. demos are an essential part of the process, but rarely do they actually need to be released and heard.
or so i thought.
as these back to basic tracks actually became my favourite disc of the year. there was something about the whole ambience and mood that up till that point i was missing in my ongoing quest for the perfect song. the love of glam was there in the fuzz guitars and piano, the sheer craft of the song and genuine chill up the spine moments eg the layered vocal chorus in the epic year of the pig, meant that these throwbacks to classic 70s late night rock-n-roll were timeless in so many ways.
so, having checked, i have been given the all clear to post one of the best unreleased songs by one of my favourite bands.
favouritism by yours truly ?
too bloody right.
it’s my blog.
