hell.o
after a while of not feeling too connected to the world of hip hop i get a chance to check out the forthcoming dj yoda album, the amazing adventures of dj yoda . hurray.
proper review to appear in the usual place, but let’s just say, yodas blast of movie/advert samples, looped silliness, video game sound effects, and suchlike (with the odd high profile guest popping up from time to time), are a wonderful antidote (ha) to all things hip hop normally stands for.
though, sampling 80’s slap bass funkers level 42 is a little too close to the cringesome bone.
to make matters worse, the offending track, ‘wheels’, is to be lifted as a single !
of course, life is never that simple, despite featuring the thumb, yoda manages to craft a track of radio friendly, smile inducing brilliance out of the cheese filled samples.

so, onto other good stuff in the pile.
goose, whose album, bring it on, is a wonderful marriage of fat analogue synths and rock-n-roll. a well worn cliche maybe, but i’ll be damned if this album aint going to please a lot of people.
11 tracks in 36 minutes means the album doesn’t outstay its welcome, always a bonus.
out on skint records today.

oh, and in case you didn’t know, akira the don has a new limited single out, oh! what a glorious thing (1000 copies, 7″ vinyl). a-side is a smooth album track of loved up beauty, and the flip, boom!, is a britpop sampling monster that’s going to get hammered in all the right places.

stay tuned for more as and when via the aforementioned rss feed.
