pati yang – hold your horses ep

out this week, pati yangs second ep continues the excellence that her debut ep, wires and sparks, established.

again the production is courtesy of joseph cross (hurts), who clearly has worked out out how to encompass patis dramatic vocals within some wonderfully listenable sonics, yet joseph keeps the audio trickery within check, making sure that the vocals remain the central focus.

opening with the big pop of the title track, hold your horses, with its radio friendly pseudo-gospel overtones, the ep then gets darker with the electro-stomp of darling, that takes the goldfrapp love of dirty grooves and straps on a depeche mode via peter hook styled low slung bass line. excellent stuff.

revolution baby kicks off with some sharp as a needle processed guitars, and proves that the love for curve travelled far and wide. the fact that this is a collaboration with patis previous partner in crime, stephen hilton, should provide some indication as to how this makes me sad that we never got to hear a finalised copy of the second flykkiller album.

but hey, the odd collaboration here and there will keep me happy. especially when the results are as strong as this with its great big fat slo-mo 80s gated drums, anthem styled chorus, and end of the night atmospherics.

finally there is kiss it better, a sombre piece that builds up into a hands in the air styled electro monster, demonstrating the vocal ranges that pati is capable of.

summary : quality euro pop for the masses.
