prior to my recent hiatus, i picked up a copy of cults self titled debut, and found myself loving their layered guitar pop.

then i realised why.

a girl-boy duo from nyc trading in detailed sonic layers, sweet sun kissed harmonies, guitars, and subtle electronics.

after a couple of spins i realised that the signifiers were very similar to a band that for a few years were top of my playlist : joy zipper.

of course much has been written about vinny and tabitha, not too mention the protracted major label troubles in getting their second album ‘american whip‘ out to the patient fans.

when i eventually got around to getting my hands on a copy of the album i was relieved to find that in a word the album was perfect from start to finish. the duo fleshed out the band into a fully fledged band and took to the road to showcase their love for fuzzed up bitter sweet excess.

the tour passed through my city of work, meaning i was lucky to catch an acoustic lunch hour showcase gig in the basement of fopp in bristol, to be followed by a far noisier plugged in gig in the evening of the same day.

life was good. very good.

as part of the album promotion campaign, the label released a limited 7″, baby you should know, which had this schneider tm remix hidden away on the flip.

as far as i know this has never seen the light of day digitally, and so, is a bit of a rarity, so please forgive the extra scratches, but personally i reckon they just add to the ambience on offer.

as to the band current activities ?

well, since their last album released back in 2005, the heartlight set (a far more live band sounding album – possibly as a result of the songs being developed on the tour), things have gone quiet.

i know that vinny and tabitha tied the knot and have teased folks via their myspace hangout re new material from time to time, but that’s it.
