sometimes there is just too much choice

just wanted to check : am i the only person that suffers choice overload ?

during the blogging golden years when ireallylovemusic was on the promo mailing lists for various labels i had a structured plan as to what to listen to during daylight hours.

as people at work will confirm, i would always have a pile of skinny promos on my desk with the honourable intention of making my way through them as and when. this of course meant i had to endure a lot of rubbish (the glory years of landfill indie), thereby leading me to end up ignoring most that got sent. such ineptitude i suspect resulted in me being understandably blacklisted given that i was a waste of time and resource for all concerned.

so now that i no longer have a semi-structured playlist, i am free to listen to whatever i bloody well want to.

which is fantastic.

really really fantastic.

or is it ?

you see, in recent months, due to various real world reasons, my head has demanded a constant stream of comfort sounds to help soothe away the strains and stresses, leading me to venture into new-to-me areas of listening. predominantly such demands have resulted in a dive into music made during the 60s and 70s due to the excess of 80s revivalism that has occurred over the last few years, resulting in my need to avoid anything made on dusty synths for a while.

this has meant a dive into 60s psych, 60s french pop, and discovering catalogues of such labels as tk disco, salsoul, trojan records, and even fania.

all have been a source of wonderful music, opening my ears to genres i never expected to enjoy (me, salsa !), but i’ve loved every minute of it.

however, such selfishness ends up with the blog not really getting any attention, and this then begins to chew away at my inner soul.

i fully endorse and often check up on genre specific blogs and wish i could focus on one style thereby becoming an entry point for all fans of genre x, but my head just aint wired like that.

i love electronic music blogs that are purely dedicated to expose the latest and greatest sounds from the cutting edge of machine music, and upon waking up in a morning, i often feel that’s where my heart lies and intend to head back into the world of solid state blips-n-bleeps, but within 6 minutes of getting online i’ll be rummaging through my work based digital archive and rediscovering an unplayed. long forgotten (by me that is) fopp based back catalogue purchase, which then puts my head in a unexpected direction for the rest of the day/week/month.

which leads me to the point i made at the start.

given i no longer have any structure in my listening demands, i often struggle to figure out what i actually want to listen to.

i mean i want to listen to electronic music, salsa, 70s disco, nu-balaerica, 60s psych, northern soul, all of the bloody time.

quite simply : there is too much choice.

hey ho, i guess its time for some lou rawls, or the electric prunes, then again, there is the new ep by the dadavistic orchestra!
