having been through various guises, it’s clear that steve webster cannot help himself.

he simply has to make music.

from his t-rex-isms with fort lauderdale, via the electronic based fuzz pop of the black neon (a lost classic if ever there was one), to this latest project, the brilliantly named, higamos hogamos.

following the mix-n-match approach of the debut album (reviewed : here) in which drawn out epic instrumental krautrock monsters sat alongside glam pop there has been a back to the drawing board meeting to figure out where the strengths and weaknesses lie.

the result of which is this 34 minute, 6 track, self released mini album, sorcery.

no longer trying to go for the vocal spot, the music is all about the clash of monster groove clatterfunk drums (both real and machine based loops), spaced out, phased-n-looped wah wah guitars all of which is then underpinned by a rack of throbbing old school analogue synths, phatter than phat bill laswell referencing bass lines and a mountain of effects pedals through which the interstellar noises are wired.

basically, it’s either the late night smoky jam session, where finding that bass line is the beginning of the journey, and then rolling with the head nodding funk (jahari window & o deo), or, the more rigid rhythmic patterns and twisted layers. the best example being the title track, sorcery, and its alternate version, with swirling head spinning analogues and a back to basics sisters of mercy drum machine loop, resulting in a barnstormer of a track that demands some dancefloor guru drop this in the right place taking the dancing throng to a whole new level of pleasure.

of course people with extensive knowledge of can and suchlike may recoil in ‘heard this all before’ styled horror, but from this corner of inexperience, i cant help but admit that i love the results.

currently this slice of headphone space rock is only available via the bands website.
