ok, i’ll be the first to admit that in recent times i have been somewhat distracted.
times have been somewhat chaotic and all over the place (both physically, and mentally) which i think is reflected in the lack of blog love, and when such times kick in i revert back to my musical listening comfort zone which just happens to involve a lot of david axelrod, northern soul and tk disco.
so apologies that this post is overdue, but hey, better late than never.
you may recall, a while back i posted details on the new album, mashpop and punkstep, by the young punx, (here)a mish mash of cut up electro styles that despite the chaos, managed to put a smile on my face, and a funk in my spine. well, turns out that the lads have handed over their beloved grooves to a gang known as audio porn all stars with the result being this full on bootleg version galore excess.
illicit samples, well known snippets (old and new from lady gaga to the pixies via poison and even emf) pop in and out, and big dance fun is the name of the game.
of course, the whole shock of the new is well over when it comes to such bootlegs, but still, hearing opera warbling being put alongside to the pixies while a full on orchestral backing does its grandeur thing, cannot help but sweep the listener up and induce an attack of goosebumps. the result, phil retrospector ends up being a serious contender for exposure excess should the right people in the right places get to hear this (a la constant use of that orchestral overload that opens trouble in paradise, by unkle that the tv channels cannot help but use when big drama strings are required).
for a freebie you really cant complain.
sod the sell by date factor such projects can sometimes invoke and just let the fun start.
