the young punx – ‘mashpop and punkstep’ – out now! by mofohifi records
while i may be currently all distorted electro’d out, this gang of studio tanned freaksters (hal ritson, nathan taylor and simon bettison) have managed to put together an album that will provide smiles for anyone wanting a simple set of straight to the dance floor grooves.
the punx second album incorporates electro’d up pop, widescreen hip hop (feat. jazz rap legend count bass d no less on the excellent ready for the fight!), disco-funk and a lots of those cut up filtered digital synths, which is to be expected given that the album has been produced by rising french star, phonat.
have to admit though the opera inclusion of the played straight o mio babbino caro, harks back to malcolm mclarens attemts at fusing opera with hip hop so not sure as to the need to revisit such a hard left turning in the middle of proceedings, while the punked up snotty riffs of simple pleasures takes a moment to settle down before the revelation that actually the lads actually want to be a fusion of kenickie and daft punk, and rock star (understand), is pure sputnik-esque synthetic bubblegum pop brilliance with clashing synths and manic over the top guitar solos, closing the album on an guilty pleasure high.
there will always be a need for lightweight, fun party pop music, so why the f*ck should a miserable grump from leeds stop you from hearing this blast of genre hopping sonically induced chaos in all its streaming entirety ?
