pati yang : faith hope + fury

while the world (ok me), waits for new material by the duo that is flykkiller there is the small matter of pati yangs solo album, faith hope + fury,  that came out in poland last year.

you see, back in her homeland, pati is a proper pop star.

she is signed to the polish division of emi records and has budgets for videos and things, and sells out concerts far larger than your local spit-n-polish pub gig.

once such a fact came to my attention i immediately put in place a plan to get my hands on a legit copy of the album (not that easy to be honest).

as is often the case, the albums i have to track down are often the ones that are the most worthy.

while this is not billed as a flykkiller album the team that have forged the musical backing here is predominantly co-conspirator stephen hilton, alongside other studio boffins who have appeared on david holmes various albums (eg. guitars by leo abrahams a fine solo artist in his own right).

needless to say, such a pedigree means that this is an excellent sounding leftfield electro goth pop album that plays up top patis vocal strengths while stephen does his twisted studio trickery, albeit in a mass market friendly form.

with that in mind, it should come as no real surprise to find out that instead of consistent style, the album plays like a mish mash of radio playlist favourites as if the 11 tracks are a showcase for the vocal talents of pati yang.

this means the albums runs the gamut of widescreen dark soul trip hop with the dramatic album opener : summer of fears, goldfrapp styled guitar twang heavy robo-glam : stories from dogland, pure electro beauty: timebomb, addictive 90s pop dance rhythms of a little wrong  (seriously : this is a radio smash hit if anyone would give it a go), via the epic spine tingling orchestral pop of the boy in your eyes.

of course there are easy to spot sonic world dominating references such as garbage, massive attack, and even texas, but there is no denying it, this is an excellent pop album that pays dividends with each listen.

very enjoyable, and highly recommended.
