following the recent outing of me having a splurge on late 80s/early 90s dayglo indie here’s a rare little example as to what i love about the darling buds so much.
while fellow travellers the primitives got the big hit, with the radio saturation of crash, the buds got the albums that stayed the course.
album #1 : pop said .. : 12 tracks of non-stop upbeat fuzz pop class. ramones vs blondie with andrea providing the miles of smiles for the indie kids.
album #2 : crawdaddy : an underbelly of indie dance beats, and a bigger bass presence.
album #3 : erotica : came out at same time as madonna album of the same name. moved the fizz bang happy moods of the debut into a darker area. heavily influenced by the effects heavy loops by my bloody valentine, albeit with lighter tunes, and radio friendly songs.
each of the albums have stood the test of time really well, but i guess i would say that.
so, here is a cracking slice of old school indie pop. no dance floor remixes, a minimum of studio trickery. just straightforward 3 chords (if that), head spinning melodies, and guitars.
different daze is from the early days. a b-side too the chart smash, let’s go round there, ("straight in, straight out peaking at number 45 of the proper charts) that was only available on the 12″ version, until recently when the album was re-released with a smattering of b-sides.
wait till the sun shines again, open your window, and blast this 4 minute blast of joyful pop brilliance out for all to soak up.
spread the love, and prove to the world that the 80s were not all about miserable moods, grey skys and crap hair when it came to guitar pop.
