william orbit – purdy ep

having reviewed and enjoyed the album, my oracle lives uptown, from which this track has been lifted, i was rather keen to hear these new remixes.

however, as much as it saddens me to say, i think william orbit has actually missed a trick here.

basically, the original laid back blissed out slice of gorgeousness, has been given five set of thumping and bumping makeovers aimed squarely at the dance floor.

chart topper chicane has, as to be expected, provided a commercial  big room hands in the air euphoria dance track that will make a lot of people feel good; greenmoney goes for a more electro-dancehall vibe with a jump up beat, and snatched vocals which at the 3 minute mark then adds an extra layer of rave styled synths; billy buttons heads for the old school piano house riff groove, adds some lightweight sunkissed fem-vox to the proceedings, and keeps things close to the source; and finally, henner & green go all widescreen bleep-n-rave anthem-esque, which while not bad, is purely functional.

all of which underlines the fact that the original version (also included on the ep) is by far the better of the bunch.

so what’s missing ?

well, were i to have any input to the remix selection, instead of these run of the mill dance floor fillers, i would have suggested that given the quality of the source material with its central piano riff, swooping synths and underlining synthetic throb, i would have used up the budget to track down lindstrom and prins thomas, requested an epic 25 minute drawn out nu-balaeric disco retake, and let the resulting funker loose.

naturally, i can see such a team up being highly beneficial to my play list.

after all, william orbits previous work virtually defined sunshine friendly, ambient house, and purdy (the original) very much fits in with that league of excellence.
