kora! kora! kora! – the cabaret voltaire versions

feels like i’ve had this album in the pile for a long long time.

i mentioned the reappearance of the cabaret voltaire name in the pile back at the end of november last year, and now, at last the album is available to all via proper shops should you be so inclined.

having had the legal rights over the cabaret voltaire name now for a while, it’s only right that richard h. kirk steps out of his multiple pseudonym loop of the last few in exile years, and gets his brand of melodic, bass heavy ambient techno back out in the real world, beyond the virtual confines of his itunes only releases.

for this long awaited reappearance, richard h. kirk has decided to take an album by new zealand based maori dub band kora, and has revised the source material into a superb set of electronically enhanced digital dub that supplements the bands legendary catalogue perfectly.

often throughout this 55 minute set of cut ups, vocal samples underpin the bleeps, juddering synths (that are very mid 80s cabaret voltaire it has to be said) and subsonic bass lines that will shake any substandard building foundations, giving any fans of 80s era cabaret voltaire massive injections of pleasure thrills, but as opposed to this just being an exercise in nostalgia, i cannot stress how much this album is a very contemporary sounding release.

clearly, richard h. kirk has been taking an interest in the sonic developments when it comes to the use of big bass and reverb’d electronics (hello dubstep) as several of the tracks incorporate a wide screen spaced out orb-like vibe, but with a welcome layer of paranoia and drama as is often the case with richard’s productions.

the results make for a brilliant brilliant album, and now that it’s available properly, can hopefully be enjoyed far and wide across the world.

[note : the album is packaged in what is believed to be the final works by the designers republic, who a few weeks ago announced their  demise.
