my toys like me – grin and wriggle (timo maas remix)

having seen this bands name bandied about i was already aware of the hype machine being geared into action, so i guess it was only a matter of time before the remixes started flying around the wire, and lo and behold, here is one.

other than a cracking placebo remix (special k) many years ago, i know little about timo maas, but clearly he has been keeping an eye and ear out on the current demands of the more discerning dancefloor, as he has crafted an 18 minute epic floor filler that probably bears little relation to the source material (i’ve yet to hear the original of the track).

starting off disjointed and ambient (in a creepy but pleasant way), the bands vocalist, frances noon, throws about an excessive level of dropped consonants in her spooked whisper singing style, meaning that for those of us with memories of days long gone, there are throwbacks to the excellent nicolletes experiments with the black dog.

the track lies low for a while, then literally on the the stroke of 4 minutes timo drops the boom factor as in comes a compelling synthetic bass line, the kick, and the all important techno thump.

the track is now into a full on crowd pleaser mode, with layer upon layer of processed unhinged noises and loops adding to the intensity with the pressure being applied to greater and greater effect for the next quarter of an hour.

despite concerns of this being a made to order cash-in remix to grab at the last remaining morsels of minimal techno kudos, there is no denying that the end result is quite something, and recommended for anyone who likes the drawn out epic grooves of people like radio slave, and his ilk.
