king cannibal – aragami style/flowers of flesh and blood

as part of todays ninja tune/big dada catch up exercise i just mentioned, i remembered that i had received a 2 track ep by new signing king cannibal aka zilla a few months ago.

released last year i cannot believe how i missed out on the brilliance.

known mainly for his cut-n-paste hip hop mixtapes, this debut ep on ninja tune is a masterful slab of hard and bass heavy production that has to be heard.

i rarely detract my stereos settings from the flat response, but for some reason today prior to giving this another airing i turned up the bass a few notches, and damn, when the beat-n-bass kicked in i nearly fainted.

intense, dark and disturbing, the lead track, aragami style, ducks and swerves through ever changing speaker crunching d-n-b beats, via moody vocal samples, bass booms, and a sense of impeding end of world doom.

aural violence that distresses and messes with the listener.

quite simply, it’s fucking amazing, and i’m sorry i missed out on spreading the word upon its release.

the other track, flowers of flesh and blood steps up the atmosphere, while stripping back on the beats, injecting more darkness into the sonics making it remind this listener of the more moody parts of the hoodlum priest back catalogue (use of horror film sample/choirs etc), before all acidic squiggle hell breaks loose.

very special.
