personally a good year – healthy happy kids, and at last wooden flooring in the last remaining untouched room @ ireallylovemusic hq became a reality.
music collection wise not that good.last year saw some obvious high profile releases that just clicked with most (arcade fire/lcd soundsystem being 2 obvious choices), that enjoyed both commercial and critical success.
check out the various end of year lists, and it’s clear that nothing has really connected across the genre divides.
while i enjoyed a few new albums, [list is now up on another site just around the corner], i can’t deny the fact that most of the year i listened to stuff that wasn’t released in 2008.
a sign of my own greying times, or generally a crap’un ?
i’d suggest any year in which a highly praised band of beardy folks spouting off about how brilliant the fucking beach boys are would imply there was definitely a lack in progress given that every year there seems to be a plethora of bands that use brian wilson as the blueprint on which to base their own harmonised moans-n-groans.
i mean, please, it’s 2008.
on a good tip, it looks like 2008 saw the end of landfill indie, and at last labels are wising up to the fact that blokes with guitars and a few records by the jam/television/gang of four/beatles etc etc are, on the whole, dull dull dull.
now, one final request, can people please put away their justice records.
that over compressed digital noise dance thing has been played out.
in summary, 2009 : bring it on.
