last week i got lucky.
checking out one of my local vinyl/trade in haunts i spotted a new pile of cds that looked familiar.
weirdly, despite the kudos level having dropped off the planet, there was a pile of mo’wax/ninja tune/warp cds.
i guess a cash poor (ex) student had decided they no longer required head nodding trip hop, or some quality home listening electronica and had decided to grow up and listen to survive with their ipod collection.
thankfully that persons loss is my gain, as amongst the usual suspects happened to be a well preserved, reasonably priced copy of the major force boxset, the original art-form, that i have been on the look out for ever since i let one slip out of my hands up in halifax back in the mid 90s.
now, while i had picked up the major force compilation, 93-97, that mo’wax released towards the end of its glory period, and had heard a lot of the collective records via mixtapes, i had never actually heard this 2 cd set properly.
so when i dropped the disc(s) in the player, a sudden rush of memory overload kicked in as the spaced out, sample heavy, instrumental hip hop joints rattled my woofers.
a lot of this stuff was very familiar – why ?
then it came back to me.
years before the mo’wax connection, back when i was a student, i had picked up a copy of mix mag with a free cd on the cover.
this was 1990 and a free cd was big news. especially as the cd contained mixes of classics on the warp, creation and gee street labels.
the reason for my pocket money denting was for the bleep heavy warp records mastermix that colin faver sorted out, and i was all over the bleep noise every saturday night whenever i got the chance, so this freebie mix was very much flavour of the era for me.
what i had forgotten that to kick start the cd, judge jules had mashed up several major force tracks into a 14 minute slice of excellent sample heavy cut-n-paste enjoyment.
so, a little diggin’ in the archive, and i have managed to retrieve said mix, and have decided to let the funker loose on the wire.
it’s all about the massive bass drop at 10 minutes and 9 seconds. pure bliss.
