melnyk – revolutions ep

you know i often forget just how rewarding running this blog can be.

it’s not just the knowledge that a few people out there on the wire are correcting my typos and cursing my lack of indepth analysis, but the fact that due to the blog, i have been in a position to hear so much excellent new music, some of which even gets released, and, even more pleasing, is that recently a lot of which drops on my mat, (real and virtual), makes my heart go boom. it seems that word has spread that currently ireallylovemusic is all about the love of electronic music, whether it’s of the pop, techno, or dance variety.

only this week, i got the chance to hear the freelance hellraiser remix, the atmospheric shri 12" and the latest releases from pieces of eight records.

then out of the blue last night, i received an email from melnyk, he of the absolutely wonderful silence album.

the man has, alongside pushing the gaymonkey label to every corner of the web, been slaving over his beloved analogue toys, to make a highly anticipated followup, revolutions, which will feature collaborations with temposhark (again ! they have remixed each other previously with superb results), label boss and electronic pop star in her own rights, sara berg, and label mate, ebb.

oh yes, it’s a family affair all right.

however, prior to the release of the full length (22nd sept) comes this cracking ep, featuring the title track and two remixes, one by the charmingly named thugfucker, and the other artego.

the original song continues the melnyk tradition of revisiting the glory years of synth pop, with the emphasis placed firmly in the pop side. so much so, that for this particular grey hair, memories flood back when certain drum sounds are midi’d and clicked into place, making the lead track a perfect entry point for anyone who wishes to hear more thompson twins b-sides, blancmange remixes, and human league classics.

yet, despite these historical retreads, the sound is remarkably fresh and relevant to the here and now, making me look forward to the album all the more.

both remixes are clearly aimed at the danceflor, giving the laid back nature of the source a proper disco-bunny makeover.

artego heads down the acid house groove, building up nicely with its uptempo throbs and strobe friendly breaks, before cutting out, and dropping in a clear section of thomas dolby love. for a few moments, the choice of sound and chord structures are pure dolby, however, it’s not too long before the glitterball is back to full speed, and the track continues on its course for bleep-tastic love. then to finish off the package, thugfucker, underpins the track with a bass heavy thump, slows down the groove, and provides a stripped back electro edge that is deliciously clear and funky.

highly recommended.
