this years klaxons anyone ?
well in so much that this debut has confounded those that expected this hyped band to fall flat on their arse and make a boring album. instead this is a madly off the wall blast of nu-grave electro with chunks of prog-rock thrown in to confuse the listener. tracks chip-and-pin on a regular basis, but rather than annoy, the effect is one of enjoyable aural dislocation, resulting in an album where you have no idea as to what’s coming next.
of course the bands well known classics, and rips from gary numan ( the still brilliant space and the woods), are thrown out early on in the playlist, meaning that once you get past the superb single heartbeat, and the eccentrically over the top showtune piano break during whitesnake, the album does flag a little in the second half, as nothing comes close to these near-future pop classics.
but, given that this is a short 40 or so minutes then who cares, when the album is just a wonderfully refreshing blast of dance floor directed indie, that has a desire to kick your unrequited love for dreary trad brit pop-n-rock into outer orbit once and for all.
