the girl can sing her heart out in good old x factor fashion giving it the diva styled vocal excess.
normally this would annoy the hell out me, but rather than tepid made to order pop productions, ava leigh has drafted in the production crew that shaped the chart topping reggae pop of lily allen, and told them to make more of the same.
in other words, authentic old fashioned bouncing riddims using such heavyweights as sly and robbie as part of the rhythm section, thus giving the whole project an air of credibility. though thankfully, ava doesn’t dip into the same bitch infested waters lyrically as lily, making rollin’ a lightweight reggae pop album that is enjoyable as opposed to the teenage on a strop session that lily became known for.
the result may all look a little shady (a major record label funded reggae version of amy winehouse), and contrived, but there’s no denying the fact that some of the songs are double choc chip helpings of summer vibes and dubby grooves, especially on the obviously double entendre rich album closer, rollin’
[note : there is a well developed backstory as to just how ava became so enamoured with 70s era reggae if you are wanting to know more]
