the whip – blackout

from their humble beginnings on the kids label all those years ago, it has been fascinating to watch the whip progress up the rankings, to now become one of the countries best known indie-dance bands.

despite the fact several people over the last year have told me that i would love the album, x marks destination, i’ve never got around to picking it up, so having a chance to hear the latest single was was rather interesting.

while blackout doesn’t do anything too original, the radio edit is a perfectly fine slice of peter hook bassline, squiggly acidic synth action, and easy saturday night chant-a-long lyrical hooks. for the remixes the band have turned to disco loving ashley beedle who has turned in a 9 minute disco-trance epic that holds little of the source material in place other than a snippet of the vocal cut to the groove. in fact i would suggest that there are nudges towards the genius remixes by carl craig throughout the pulsating machine funk of the so called next generation edit, all of which can’t detract from the fact that its a bloody good remix. the mysterious popular computer remix is a more contemporary, ed banger digital noise styled retake albeit in a more laid back ambient manner, and so will probably be the version that the haircut brigade will select when making their all important summer holiday mixtapes.
