my home based cd player is a fussy bugger. a downright pain in the ass.
several of those promo cd-rs that get sent are dropped into the machine, only for me to end up listening to the machine spin out of control.
this is fine a lot of the time, but every now and then, i am in receipt of a cd that i really would love to spend some time with, and many months ago now, the black ghosts single ep, anyway you choose to give it, was indeed one such item.
something about the skull’d up imagery, and the love of electro and pop sounded perfect for yours truly.
however, the cd-r was one of those unlucky ones, meaning i was unable to kick back and enjoy the sounds on offer.
thankfully though, i recently spotted this official mixtape that features said track along with an eye watering, shrill-tastic lineup of compressed to fuck indie electro.
of course, over the last few months, i may have been a little overly critical of the mass of tinnitus inducing indie-electro, but the truth of the matter is, of all the current noises being made out there, this groove is the only one that manages to make me smile and glad to be listening to new music in 2008. the results when done right are easily the tracks that hit the playlist the most.
so, along with the ever interesting kitsune maison compilations, this blended, re-edits, mashup mixtape is a perfect all encompassing catch up release, featuring all manner of known names, and a few leftfield turns (eg. the neo-soul experiment by ben westbeech). naturally, the whole point of this is to make you start drooling at the prospect of the black ghosts full length album proper, and thankfully, the appearance of their own tracks in the mix actually compound the expectation, as their own submissions are actually the mixtape highlights.
oh, and the fact that the coverart is a sly dig towards a well loved indie icon makes matters even more darkly enjoyable.
