(aka – the richie hawtin remix)
in the uk the sun is shining. a lot. this a very rare situation and so must treated with utmost respect.
my head is red and painful. so you can understand why 1994 fax styled ambient music is the flavour of the day. however, i have dug out a little treat to help make the sunshine bliss all the more enjoyable.
my ongoing need to listen to nothing but machine made music is weird given that i started off staring at a huge pile of ironing to sort out before my shift started and thinking to myself that i actually fancy listening to some party styled mixtape of breaks, hip hop, and a slab of funk. in other words i dug out my fsuk mixtape collection (freestylers/bentley rhythm ace/cut la roc/derek dahlarge), and pretended to have a mini big beat revival going on in ireallylovemusic hq. after 50 minutes of the freestylers ripping into the electro old school my passion for the ever increasing need to find the biggest beat i found my interest somewhat waning.
the timing of the beat boredom setting in was matched by our newly re-christened killing kat dragging in yet another poor wretched half mauled creature into the house.
having spent a large proportion of the weekend saving mice and birds from the claws of the re-christened killing kat, i decided "enough was enough!", and action had to be taken. this latest incident of blood thirst meant i was in need of a quick jaunt to the nearest pet shop to find the loudest mutha fuggin’ bell on a killing kat collar this side of the cotswolds so to provide at least the beginnings of a fighting chance for the birds.
having found said liberty bell, on the way back to the car, i popped into a charity shop to see if they had anything of interest.
2 minutes later, i was the proud owner of richie hawtin minimal mix, electronic adventures, that was a free covermount on mixmag back in 2006.
now i am no fanboy of richies, but recently, fopp have been clearing the stock of the cd/dvd of de9:transitions set for a mere £2, along with lucky grab copies of his darker alter-ego plastikmans closer. both of which have propelled the minimal/ambient/techno genre back to the top of the playlist given that they are exactly the type of music that currently ticks all my boxes. electronic, melodic, deep, kind of scary, but in a psychotically reassuring manner.
so, catching this mix was a unexpected treat given that the shops mainstay are mountains of scratched to fuck copies of simply red albums..
once the killing kat was under its ding-a-ling control, i hit the qwerty, and dug into the ever reliable discogs to find out what else has been going on in the world of richie hawtin.
whoa, i have an old remix of his in the archive from my long forgotten mo’wax collection.
a mix i never heard and just filed away to be dug out on a rainy day. oh well, fuck the weather, tis time to sort out the knowledge.
another digging around, and said remix was playing out loud on the stereo.
the electronic bass booms and bleeps are not trip hop based in the slightest, but a wonderful combination of real life industrial sounding factory based clanks and fat bass lines.
i like it. a lot.
so here it is.
