malakai – ep1

not sure about this i have to say, despite the fact the ‘band’ are a local crew and its all beautifully packaged.
the package arrived with absolutely no detail as to who/why/what, yet everything is all very complete, with the results being obviously destined for zane lowe/nme friendly status.
5 tracks in 16 minutes : 2 of which are skits, 1 psych pop, 1 reggae, 1 indie dance rocker = game over.
the ep has got a kind of bees vs aspects vs pepe deluxe vs kasabian thing going on, thus lending the listener such reasons as to wonder if the band are hedging their bets for chart action.
the battle is traditional indie dance rock but wanting to add a slice of 70s authenticity to the funk, while the song is ok, the vocals just grate for this particular listener making total love hard to justify. the sweet laid back psych pop of moonsurfing fares a little better, but given the current mood @ ireallylovemusic hq, the best has to be the laid back dubbed up pop of words like humble, but even then its not a patch on the reggae tinged glories by lsk.
from the credits, it’s clear the people behind malakai love their well sourced samples, so there is no denying it’s great to hear the use of scratchy samples, and turntable funk during the nice-n-easy fading world given that such techniques within pop music have been well and truly shoved onto the sidelines in recent years as everyone rediscovers their love for old electropop records.
a classic case of : one to watch in 2008
perhaps.
