nb : aka the 808 state remix
it’s for reasons like that, that the ireallylovemusic archive comes into its own.
many years ago, i picked up these 2 bomb the bass cd ep sets, 1 to 1 religion, and the deep darkheart from a bin sale in a basement shop during a mad stop over visit to my old hometown leeds.
both were packaged in mo’wax styled cardboard outer sleeves, with each containing 2 cd singles with all manner of well known names on remix duty, eg sabres of paradise, major force west, dj pogo and alpha and omega.
of course, at the time, the reason i picked them up was due to the close connection bomb the bass had to the whole on-u soundsystem set up, making the clear album basically an on-u soundsystem album.
subsequently, many of the remixes were of the big fat dub varierty, or the flavour of the month, trip hop.
however, buried amongst the remixes were 2 that at the time i checked out and virtually ignored, as they were not my groove back then, one by ritche hawtin ( the space funk remix), and this one by 808 state, a band that i had no interest in at all, as they were all for that guest vocalist thing that always put me off.
so, its strange that this morning when i came across the cds that i dropped this 808 state remix into the machine, because, sweet mother of mine, it is fantastic.
having no connection to the source material, the opening 30 seconds completely throw you off course, its like a sample of a live show, and all the chaos such an event can cause, but slowly the track descends into this almighty blend of 808 state styled techno, ravaging percussion, and blasts of unexpected trumpet, that just takes you by the throat and doesn’t let go for the rest of the 5 minutes.
absolutely brilliant, and despite the track being over 12 years old (12 fucking years !) the production is as fresh in 2007 than it was back then.
oh to have the unknown treasures in my own archive makes me a happy happy man.
