well well well.
having found a copy of the polyphionic sprees new album, the fragile army, last week, i set about to find out a little more for the uk side of things. a little digging has revealed that the 23 piece band are to do a tour, there is a single to be released, the brilliant, running away, and even better, is that the album is to get a proper release in august, not just slipped out onto the shelves as i had originally believed.
so, today i set about watching the 50 minute film, the making of the fragile army .. on the dvd.
now, i don’t know about you, but most free dvds are pretty pointless. well not in this case. watching band leade tim delaughter build up the music from basic home made demos, to full self financed studio tracks across various studios with his various orchestral sections, and generally falling in love with his own music is a beautiful thing to watch.
the passion and sheer personal joy he is obviously experiencing while piano hero mike garson (google him for reasons as to why he is just so important to me and tim !) adds a whole new dimension to the proceedings., and by the end of the film you literally want to blast the album on at full volume to soak up the experience all over again.
oh, and in case you hadn’t realised, there is now a uk based website (link below), via which you can win a trip to see the band live later this year in london.
though being honest, i hope no-one else enters meaning i get the prize, as the album is easily one of the years best in my world.
seriously, this album has hit me hard.
the songs a lot more focussed than the bands previous releases, they are powered up beasts of melodic brilliance, and raring to go from the outset, with hardly any time for a breather, several songs build up to intense but enjoyable euphoric rush. one can only imagine how this must sound when performed live.
the multi-layered instrumentation detailed has been produced in a clear manner allowing the individual parts to sparkle, allowing wonderful sonic surprises to be scattered about the stereo headspace, all of which is counterbalanced with the gospel tinged choral backing parts that are quite literally spine tingling.
like i said, this album has hit me hard, easily one of the years best albums.
