kid acne – worst luck

hurray !
the return of the sheffield based graf artist known as kid acne. it feels like an age since i spun council estate repeatedly over a summer telling one and all that it was one of my fave albums of the year.
then following that burst of activity, i heard rumours of a link up with the ever impressive lex records but things went quiet. that was until this morning when this new ep dropped on the mat.
amazingly the link up has happened, however, alongside the invisible spies logo (kid acnes own label), the lex records logo, is the emi logo. whoa. bills are getting paid.
so, without any hesitation, i got the silver disc player warmed up, only for my 10 year old to splutter out his cornflakes asking if he had really heard the lyrics re drug dealers.
umm yeah.
lead track on the 3 tracker, the cutting edge production throughout is once again handled by long time cohort, req one, is a fine slice of uk referencing brilliance, with lyrical digs and jibes thrown in the direction of jonathan ross, fray bentos, and even everyones favourite party killer, smirnoff.
then comes the singalong vocal hook, i got 2 friends like a drug dealer.
trust me, if this were given space on daytime radio one, you’ll all be chanting this in the coming months.
the ep is then padded out with the stripped down mantronix sounding swear down, and split heads featuring that other rapper of cartoon fame, infinite livez giving it the flip over girls who like guys that dance to devo.
all in all, a friggin’ fantastic slab of uk hip hop that induces smiles and a nod of the head.
cant wait for the album, romance aint dead.
(nb. a small fact for the nerds out there – the ep has been mastered by the one and only rob gordon.
oh yes, connect up with that old fon records/sheffied history mr acne. nice.)
