lsk (aka leigh stephen kenny) has a voice that has quite a history.
from his first appearance with bedlam a go go, through to his own solo albums, appearances and collaborations with on-u sound, and fellow leeds lovers of the reggae groove, nightmares on wax. problem is, no-one else seemed to be bothered that back in 2003 he released a cracking album called outlaw, that beautifully merged his sweet soulful vocal technique with uk hip hop stylings (hence the digs towards the streets), old fashioned soundsystem horn heavy reggae, alongside some quality pop songs.
not only that but the album cover was a graffiti mucked up ghetto blaster, just how could the album fail to get the masses on board?
well to be honest, i didn’t really fall for the album upon my first hearing, possibly as sonically it’s very light and sunny, and i normally prefer my dubbed up fun a little heavier. however, today in the blistering heatwave we are experiencing in the outback of the south west of england, the album suddenly made sense.
this opening track was lifted as a single, but seeing as the lyrics are a constant dig about the quality of radio playlists it’ probably no wonder very little happened. shame, as i reckon its a cracking little ska’d up hip hop track that just rolls along nicely telling a fun little story.
so there you have it for today, no cutting edge remix that’s only available in the blogsphere, no unreleased special extra, instead, just a few minutes of easy on the ear skanking pop music. sometimes that is a perfect perfect option.
