king tubby – i trim the barber

whenever i work from home i have all the intentions of seriously killing some of the ‘to review’ pile as i have soul saving singular access to the stereo meaning i can hammer the volume to the rafters, pile on the beats and noise and really get down to the bass driven monsters that are on the release schedule.
however, as is often the case, monday morning comes around and the passion drifts away.
instead the day drifts on with the usual rounds of school run, home based chores and general time killing mundanity.
so having endured the beatles over the weekend to smiles all around just what would today be filled with ?
indie punk funk inexcelsis ? electro-fied haircut soundtracks ? nu-rave ? sigue sigue sputnik ?
naaaahh – sod all that – tried it, got fed up.
making it time to hit the archive until the inspiration hits home.
it’s not often, but today the reggae groove has been the source of total and utter joy.
not the usual ireallylovemusic sanctioned on-u sound system extremes, instead the pleasure has been brought about by 70s dub and reggae-soul music from the likes of dennis bovell, the east vs west tag team of king jammy meets dry and heavy (an album i never really got into until today it must be said, but something clicked today), and the fantastic drawn out dubbed up brilliance of the compilation jack ruby hi fi that compiles 4 extra long explorations of song based reggae before adding splattering of old school dub excess making this a seriously wonderful album.
now i don’t have anything rare and special when it comes to this form of music to spread far and wide via the blog, instead i just rely on the brilliant trojan records mixtapes (hello andy smith, nextmen, madlib and dj shortkut adding a welcome hip hop element to the proceedings on the sister antidote label), and a few other bits and bobs that are available in any decent record shop. i mean those dennis bovell reissues are dead cheap and a great starting point, and just about every fopp have a great selection to get the whole love flowing.
here’s a king tubby dubbed up version of the much loved ali baba by lovers rock hero john holt, taken from the fine sound of the shebeen volume 2 compilation.
