tom vek – if you want (playgroup dub)

typical.
now that output recordings have gone pop i realise that this is a label i should have been more involved with.
however, their love of all things vinyl and extremely limited made it virtually impossible for the causal listener to keep track with.
so instead i will have to just dig out the cds that i did manage to pick up along the way and pretend i was up to speed all along.
anyway, with the love flowing @ ireallylovemusic hq for the excellent dk7 album, and the aforementioned circlesquare releases, i tried to figure out what i may have that would not be sitting in everyones archives and then i remembered this nugget.
for a few weeks back in 2005 i was really loving the tom vek album, but then my opinion changed.
the home made production, initially a plus side, really began to grate and annoy, especially when the album was listened to on headphones. which is a shame, as i firmly believe that underneath the crap production were some cracking songs, as proven by toms live appearance at glastonbury.
his brand of talking heads styled indie-whiteboy-funk really worked far better in the live arena and revealed the quality that was being held back by the lack of recording budget.
with this in mind, i suspect that trevor jackson (ie playgroup) realised that by stripping away the excess for this early single release on tummy touch (ie prior to the big label island moving in), and focussing on the new order styled bass would make for a far better version of the track – i think he was spot on.
if only someone had suggested that trevor take the album and apply his widescreen 80s gloss over the whole album i would have been a much happier man back then.
in the meantime, console yourself with the remix, it’s good.
