the trip – navigated by tom middleton

last time i hard one of these the trip compilations it was by jarvis coker and full of completely unknown tracks.
for this collection, tom middleton has been a lot more recognisable, while still creating a rather special album.
obviously tom has been around the scene for a while, and is well established in the ways of quality track selection.
so for this mix, he has put together some fun stuff, i monsters – the la la song, the thames tv ident leading into the opening theme for this is your life being a weird flashback if you dont follow the track selection, and the theme from some old tv show i used to watch many many years ago, (vision on ?), some old school hip hop (stereo mcs for the uk connection, eric b and rakim for the us), before letting the groove mellow out slightly with the whistling splendour that is airs alpha beta gaga (featuring mark ronson/rhymefest). of course an hour cant be complete without a little pumped up soul, a dash of ska, before it all becomes gooey and smooth on us with boards of canada, simian, surreal 40s soundtrack music by darleen carr, and even proper synth masters tangerine dream make an appearance!
oh yes, this is one seriously diverse flow of a mix, that even makes me think previously i may have been overly harsh on breaks co-op as their contribution, duet, fits in perfectly. for once, i am rather chuffed that the tracks aren’t all mashed up and instead the gently blend into one another (note : there is an unmixed version supplied as well for people who like their gaps) giving the whole set a wondeful flow.
in fact this is exactly the sort of compilation that can replace a proper radio station, no crap presenters, no commerical breaks, no broken 64kbps stream, instead you get decent track selection, a level of educational value (i had no idea i would love european oompah marching band type track by shantel!) and a fine soundtrack to accompany some of the autumn evenings with.
to summarise : nice. very.
