all saints – rocksteady

is it so very wrong of me to love this?
has this been given the all clear by the mia/sugababes/rachel steven/annie loving pop judges?
if not, i care not.
you see pop music is all about the opera of soap. whether that involves the rotating fallouts for the sugababes, or the celeb magazined desperation for fame from ex-<instert your own manufactured pop band here> there is nothing like pop music. and of all the lot, the all saints (or is it now all joined up allsaints as the cover implies – what a crap idea that would be – ahem) really took the prize home. the legendary egos, the rock star weddings, the tv documentaries, the out and out obvious nature of the interband distrust and possibly in some cases hatred.
so, following the natural decline in star status that follows solo album failures (shazny solo album in fopp now for £3 anyone), someone somewhere has managed to get the saints all in one room and get back to doing what they do best, make pop music. however factuous the relationship is, they all still obviously crave that limelight, want to experience the joy that is mtv saturation, and even (according to the details) go on tour.
the lead track, b-sides not provided on the promo, is gloriously timestamped for 2006 with a hint of pop reggae in its step, and having greg kurstin doing all the widescreen production studio extras, it’s sure to be a winner.
no fake crunk, no plastic r-n-b, no electro bootlegging. just straight to a-playlist hook heavy simple and direct pop music.
and i am loving it.
even if we only get the one album (‘studio 1’ – a subtle reference to the dubbed up productions from the same named studio – or is that just me being wishful) from this adventure in ego management, if this track is an indication of whats on its way, we can but hope for a rather wonderful pop album to finish off the year with.
