the black dog – loud ambient

anyone who follows this low key corner of the internet will know about my love for the sheffield collective known as the black dog.
however in 2025 they have up’d their game to a whole new level.
over the last few years they been all about their love for airports, photography, concrete, sleep, and brutalism via their predominantly drone intense ambient albums, ‘music for photographers‘, ‘my brutal life‘ (volumes 1 and 2 and this years ambient 3cd boxset), and ‘sleep deprivation‘.
then out of the blue a couple of months ago, they announced a return to the darker corners of the dancefloor as they had a revised love for their analogue machines and rothko referencing artwork.
especially the rediscovery of their 707, 808, and 909 drum machines.
subsequently they hit the record button and went for it.
the end result is this album with very little in the way of tweaks and procrastinations, and a brilliant return to the sweet spot between ambient and techno.
the bass is modern era deep and fantastic, the beats are wall shakingly intense, and the melodies are a throwback to the golden era of the genre.
easy summary #1 : bleeps-n-bass never sounded as good as this.
easy summary #2 : 2025 : the year of the black dog.
