richie hawtin – time warps ep

while the pandemic has been truly awful, it has meant that a lot of folks with access to music making machines have decided to make the best of the situation.
during the first lockdown period arnaud rebotini set about releasing an ep comprising of original material, and remixes every week. the process lasted 8 weeks, resulting in 32 tracks of brilliant and varied electronic noise (now available on bandcamp : here), then the black dog released their recent album that had been made with the lads doing their thing in each of their own respective studios, and now, for the first time in over a decade, richie hawtin releases an ep of dancefloor friendly grooves.
the ep may just comprise of 2 tracks with the second track being a remix, but this is over 35 minutes of playing time.
the 18 minute lead track, time warps, is the 2am on a smoke-n-strobe enhanced synth throbber, while the second version, takes a more sedate approach.
the sound is as glorious as you’d expect from hawtin, clean and precise beats, while the melodic synths batter away at your synapses.
the end result for those of us of a certain age is very reminiscent of classic era tangerine dream (i.e. late 70s, early 80s) when they would totally let loose with the sequencers.
absolutely fantastic.
