milk kan – junkshop

against my better judgement, i cant get this track out of my head.

the mix of geezer rap and tom waits styled new orleans funeral marching band jazz really gets under the skin.

and not only that, but there are other tracks on the album (junkshop – out this week) that are even more addictive with sing-a-long hooks comin’atcha from every 5.1 surround sound speaker..

of course due to the everyday pop cultural name drops that fill the wordplay (nick cave, vu, and an appeal to the world to stop drinking white ace), there are others that are making family connections to such folks as madness, ian drury, and mike skinner.

and you know what, they’re right, but there is no denying it, it has been a long time since i got all the way through a hip hop album, and eagerly hit the replay button when the final string heavy, easy listening sampling track, the song the night owned, ended.

i think a major reason for the love is that the backing music is disconnected from the ongoing fixation of distressed casio presets and ear shredding digital beats, and instead consists of a variety of styles involving skanking vibes, soul revue horns, cut-n-paste funky guitar licks, latino riddims, and so much more besides.

now, i’ve no idea how much of this is excellence is down to the production involvement of dubmeister prince fatty, but i care not when the results are as fun and listenable as this.

if you happen to see this lot listed in the line up for any festival that you are lucky enough to be enjoying over the coming months, then i really would recommend you check milk kan out, as its all about miles of smiles, and this lot will definitely help spread the festival love vibes.
