a couple of years ago i wrote about chris joss’s album, sticks (review : here).
well, today its all about the follow up album that came out last year, monomanics volume 1.
this time, alongside the usual elements of 70s cop funk, wah wah guitar, and a killer groove, chris has powered up his hammond organ, and has gone all billy preston on the listener. basically, high powered organ licks are the dominating factor throughout the album, making this set an uptempo soundtrack for people hosting an austin powers theme party.
the sounds and attention to detail in the production is as high as you’d expect from an artist who has delved this deeply into the 60s/70s soundtrack groove.
of course, it would be easy to dismiss the latest set as more of the same, but clearly chris subscribes to the ‘if it aint broke .. ‘ rule, and for once, i totally concur, as a quick dip into his site seems to prove that the well connected people are at last beginning to take notice as several tracks are now getting picked up for high profile tv shows.
all of which means that when you’re in the mood for instrumental 70s funk, ya just can’t go wrong with chris joss.
highly recommended.
